DIEGO RAMIREZ When Conquest Swallowed The Sun In Beyond the Veil Curated by Jake Treacy Blindside Art Space 30 May-16 June, 2018 Diego Ramirez conjures colonial forecasts, drawing a conjunction of sun and moon to ignite a perpetual darkness upon (and beyond) the gallery wall. The fiery ring references the prediction of a lunar eclipse on 24 February by Christopher Columbus, who was stranded in Jamaica at the time. LISA HILLI Trade & Transformation Blak Dot Gallery May24-June 10, 2018 The arrival of Europeans and non-indigenous people to the Gazelle Peninsula, Papua New Guinea in the late 1800s brought significant change culturally and spiritually along with the introduction of new materials and currencies. A solo exhibition by Lisa Hilli, this new body of work begins with the artists understanding of how trade beads or slave beads, a manufactured material used globally inclusive of the Solwsra/Moana/Pacific region for colonial exploitation, which was used in multiple ways. Missionaries and colonial administrators used beads to build rapport and relationships with indigenous peoples. Independent traders and foreign companies as far as Germany used beads and struck their own currency as trade for goods and services, including plantation labour. #lisahilli @blakdotgallery #trade&transformation #colonial #trade #missionaries #solwara #moana #pacificregion #materiality #as #language
